Aarsleff Rail and Siemens Mobility to deliver Denmark’s largest charging hub for battery trains
Aarsleff Rail and Siemens Mobility have been selected to build Denmark’s largest charging facility for battery trains at Hårlev Station on Stevns for the railway operator Lokaltog.
The contract was signed on 22 May 2026 following an extensive EU tender process. The new charging hub will play a vital role in Lokaltog’s transition from diesel-powered trains to a modern battery train fleet.
Region Zealand has ordered 24 new battery trains for deployment across several of Lokaltog’s routes. Approximately half of the trains will operate on the Østbanen line connecting Rødvig, Faxe Ladeplads and Roskilde.
The facility will have a charging capacity of 9 megawatts and will be able to charge four trains at the same time. The project also includes the installation of transformer systems at Hårlev Station and overhead power lines across the station’s three platform tracks.
“This project is important because it supports the electrification of Danish transport and contributes to the green transition. We look forward to delivering a solution that will make it possible to operate battery trains on routes where traditional electrification is not planned,” says Thomas Mollerup, CEO of Aarsleff Rail.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with completion scheduled for summer 2028.
The charging infrastructure project in Hårlev is funded by Region Zealand and has a total budget of DKK 241 million.
